What you'll need
Fill in the planning sheet
Download the brine-salt planning sheet (CSV) . Enter salt consumption S, expected cycles N and an explicit reserve R from the system record; calculate S × N + R. Compare the result with permitted usable salt storage, not the resin’s grain rating. The existing worked example below is hypothetical.
As a model-specific illustration, the Whirlpool WHES48 manual explains its salt-level indicator and low-salt display. That scale is not a pounds-per-cycle input or a universal reserve. The WHES40/44 manual describes a different configured system; use the manual for yours. Manufacturer references checked 1 October 2026. This worksheet does not alter programming, float settings or treatment claims.
Calculate brine-tank salt storage from salt consumed per regeneration and expected regeneration frequency, then check the approved tank’s usable fill limits. Softener grain capacity and brine-tank salt storage are different quantities. A larger brine tank does not increase the resin’s treatment capacity.
A transparent storage calculation
Use these inputs from the configured system or a service record:
- S: pounds of salt used per regeneration.
- N: expected regenerations during the planned refill interval.
- R: an explicit operational reserve in pounds, consistent with the manual’s minimum salt level.
Planning salt requirement = S × N + R.
For an illustrative system using 6 pounds per regeneration, with eight expected regenerations before the next refill and a 12-pound planning reserve, the requirement is 6 × 8 + 12 = 60 pounds. The reserve in this example is an assumption, not a universal manufacturer requirement.
Compare that figure with the approved tank’s usable storage between its permitted fill and minimum operating conditions. Nominal tank volume, bag count and maximum advertised salt capacity are not necessarily the amount you can consume before replenishing.
Stocking the result

- Salt for the 60-pound example: two 40 lb bags cover it with 20 pounds to store dry until the next refill, for example Morton Clean and Protect Water Softener Salt Pellets, 40 lb, 2-pack . Use the salt type your softener manual specifies (pellets, crystals or another approved form).
- If the result exceeds your tank’s usable storage and the softener maker approves a separate brine tank, an example is the AFWFilters 18 x 33-inch round brine tank with safety float , listed as a Fleck softener tank replacement. Confirm the brine valve, float and fitting match your control valve before ordering.
- For the hardness reading the installer needs to estimate salt demand: JNW Direct water hardness test strips, 150 strips .

Estimate cycles without pretending they are fixed
Demand-initiated systems regenerate according to their configuration and use; timer systems follow a different schedule. If actual consumption records exist, use them across representative weeks and include changes such as guests. If they do not, have the installer estimate salt demand from the water analysis and configured capacity, and label it provisional.
Do not convert staining into an arbitrary extra salt allowance for iron. Establish the actual water constituents and the softener’s permitted feed conditions. Iron treatment or source correction may be needed rather than simply a bigger salt store.
Check refill practicality
| Constraint | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Compatibility | Manufacturer-approved tank, brine valve and control arrangement |
| Fill limits | Specified salt type, minimum level and maximum fill |
| Access | Lid movement, inspection and manageable salt handling |
| Environment | Protection and storage conditions required by the equipment |
| Service | Brine-system cleaning and fault-response instructions |
A bigger tank may reduce refill frequency but does not remove inspections or service. Do not adjust brine refill time, float position or salt dose to make a storage calculation fit. Those settings affect the configured system and require its instructions.
Use the result as a planning figure
If the calculated requirement exceeds the existing approved tank’s usable storage, shorten the refill interval or discuss a supported tank option with the manufacturer. Do not overfill it. Suspected salt bridging, abnormal water level or unexpectedly high consumption calls for the manual’s troubleshooting process rather than adding more salt blindly.
NSF’s softener-standard overview provides category context. The formula and worked example here are arithmetic for salt logistics, not a softener-capacity certification or a replacement for system programming. Our low-upkeep softener buying guide covers the wider ownership decision.

What to buy
- Morton Clean and Protect Water Softener Salt Pellets, 40 lb, 2-pack : brine tank salt is the supply the planning sheet is sizing. Check the salt type your manual specifies.
- JNW Direct water hardness test strips, 150 strips : a way to record hardness for the planning inputs.
